Summary
This collection contains photocopies of Eliza O. Slocum's diary and it has entries from when she lived in Indiana and a few entires from the time she lived in Iowa (1857- circa 1880s). Mrs. Slocum recorded family events, daily activities, prayer meetings, and notes about the Indian mission in an 1857 edition of The People's Pocket Diary published by Rumrell and Brother of New York. The diary entries were written on the day of the month they occurred, but the years vary. For example, the entries in January are from 1860, but entries in February and March are from 1858. Some items of note in the diary are a trip to the Ohio State Fair in September, 1858, her husband's illness and his death on January 28, 1860, and her daughter Emma's death on April 27, 1860
Biographical or historical data
Eliza Ophelia Pierce was born March 7, 1823 in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania to Dyer and Diana Pierce. She married George Remington Slocum on January 4, 1843 at Sandusky, Ohio and they had seven children. George was the nephew of Frances Slocum, a well known Indiana captive who was taken by Delaware warriors when she was five years old and who later became a member of the Miami people and lived along the banks of the Mississinewa River near Peru, Indiana. In November, 1846, George and Eliza moved to Indiana and settled on land in Wabash County near his aunt's village. George died on January 28, 1860 and Eliza moved to Iowa around 1874. She passed away at the age of 68 on April 10, 1891. Sources: Ancestry.com. "Eliza O. Slocum." Indiana Death Certificates, 1899-2011.
