Summary
This collection contains several legal documents of Elias N. Shimer ranging from 1831 to 1844. The documents include Shimer's deed for the purchase of one and a half acres south of the Brookville Road from Joshua Stevens (December 24, 1831); his Marion County Justice of the Peace commission certificate signed by Governor Noah Noble (December 6, 1837); a deed between Edward White and Abraham Jones for eighty acres in Marion County (October 30, 1833), and the indenture transferring the eighty acres from Jones to Shimer (October 11, 1844). The collection also contains Shimer's account book for his work as a justice of the peace from 1838 to 1841 and a related archival account book (V130) containing entries by Elias from 1829 to 1864 and entries made by his son Corydon in 1876. This collection also includes correspondence and documents written by Shimer regarding Pleasant Run Baptist Church (1846-1854) and the church clerk book containing its covenant, articles of faith, rules of decorum, and meeting minutes (1832-1854)
Biographical or historical data
  • Elias N. Shimer was an early pioneer of Marion County, Indiana. He was born near Hagerstown, Maryland on December 6, 1798 to Isaac and Sarah Shimer. His family later moved west, first settling in the Monongahela region, then moving to Zanesville, Ohio. Elias met and married Mahala Dunn (1802-1886) on April 4, 1822 and they had five sons. The Shimers moved from Zanesville to Warren Township, Marion County, Indiana in November, 1829. They bought 240 acres along the Brookville Road south of present day Irvington. Shimer taught school for a number of years and served several terms as a justice of the peace and as the assessor for Warren Township. He was a member of Pleasant Run Baptist Church and served as the church clerk for many years. Shimber died at the age of 65 on July 29, 1864.Sources:"Obituary."   • The Baptist Church of Christ on Pleasant Run was the first church organized in the area that is now Irvington in Indianapolis, Indiana. The church first met in William Herrin's school house on January 22, 1832 and its covenant, articles of faith, and rules of decorum were adopted on March 1, 1832. Founding members at the March meeting were William and Rebecca Herrin, Caleb Clark, Joseph Clark, John and Drusilla Perry. Elias and Mahala Shimer joined the church in 1834. Later known as Pleasant Run Baptist Church, the congregation disbanded in 1856.Sources:Information within collection."Communications."
