Biographical or historical data
  • On March 6, 1933, President Roosevelt issued Proclamation 2039 which suspended all banking transactions for an entire week. To keep people from hoarding currency, banks were not allowed to let customers withdraw, transfer, or deposit money. The Citizens State Bank of New Castle, Indiana issued depositors bank orders as a medium of exchange during the bank holiday. The bank had issued about $6000.00 of the orders, all of which were paid by June, 1933.Sources:Information within collection.Jabaily, Robert. "Bank Holiday of 1933." Federal Reserve History.
