Biographical or historical data
Edmund Vance Cooke was born in Ontario, Canada, June 5, 1866 to Edmund (native of England) and Matilda (Vance) (native of Canada) Cooke. He grew up in Minnesota, then Cleveland, Ohio where he worked in the White Sewing Machine Company factory, beginning at age 14 and leaving public school then. He worked at the factory for fourteen years and studied at a commercial college and the YMCA. He began writing poetry at the age of 12 and was first published at the age of 14. He became a naturalized citizen in Cleveland, Ohio in 1887. After he published his first book of poetry in 1893, he became a full time poet and platform lecturer and published many poems and collections of poems. He was a member of many organizations, including the Authors' League of America, Poetry Society of America, Society of Midland Authors, International Lyceum Association, American Civil Liberties Union, and the National Council for the Prevention of War. He married Lilith Castleberry on October 17, 1897 in Chicago, IL, and they had 5 children. He died on December 18, 1932 and is buried in Cleveland, Ohio. He was nicknamed "Cleveland's Hatless Poet."
