Biographical or historical data
Dr. Erastus Winter Hewett Ellis was born in Penfield, New York, April 29, 1815 to Dr. William Robinson Ellis, who had served under George Washington during the Revolution. His mother died in 1828, leaving Erastus, two brothers and a sister. He taught school in 1829 and then studied medicine with Dr. John B. Elliott for seven years. He attended lectures at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, receiving a diploma at Rochester, NY. He was a Jacksonian Democrat and edited the Village Herald in 1834, which aided the successful candidacy of Wm. L. Marcy as Governor of New York. He originated the Token, a literary semi-monthly publication. He was appointed Commissioner of Deeds of Monroe County in 1835 and was also commissioned a lieutenant in the militia that year. He moved to Mishawaka, Indiana in 1836, practicing medicine, and moved to Elkhart County with his father, in 1838, practicing medicine together. He was offered the editorship of the Goshen Democrat and stopped practicing medicine. He married Maria Crozier, May 17, 1842. In 1844 he was elected Auditor of Elkhart County and re-elected in 1846. His wife died April 21, 1846, leaving 2 children. He married Minerva Jennette Brown Jan 27, 1848, who died June 15, 1856, leaving 1 child. He was elected Auditor of the State of Indiana in 1850, and he co-published and edited the Indiana Statesman. He was defeated in his bid for re-election, in part due to his divergence from the majority of his party, leaving the office in 1853. He left the Democratic party in 1855. He married for the final time in August of 1858 to Mrs. Rosalia Harris, a widow. He was elected by the Legislature Commissioner of the Institute for the Education of the Blind, and Secretary of the Board; was chosen President of the Pennsylvania & Indianapolis Railroad, later President of the Madison & Indianapolis Railroad. He was a director of the Indiana & Illinois Railroad and of several others. He went into mercantile business in Goshen with a brother-in-law, both of them losing a substantial amount of money. He was an editor and co-publisher of the Goshen Times for several years. He was again elected Auditor of Elkhart County in 1858 and 1862. He was a delegate for the Peace Congress in 1861, which met with no success. He was appointed by Gov. Morton as Commandant of a camp to raise a regiment, which camp was named Camp Ellis. He was appointed enrolling officer when the first draft was made, then served as Deputy Marshall of Elkhart County until the end of the Civil War. He was elected State Director of the Bank of Indiana, which office he held for one year. He was a trustee for Indiana University from 1875-1876. He died in Goshen on October, 10, 1876.
