Summary
All documents in this collection, excluding the 1919-1920 diary, reflect business transactions between members of the Durbin family. The documents date from 1818-1942 and include a variety of financial records, a notebook, notes, letters and a newspaper clipping. Three land certificates are signed by President James Monroe. Also included is an indenture dated, February 3, 1825 between Amos Durbin and Richard Perry for Perry's daughter to be bound to Durbin for nine years.The travel diary was kept by Mrs. Ira Washington Christian and includes three sections. In 1919, a trip from Edinburgh to Salem, Indiana, during which the Christians visited family sites and conducted genealogical interviews. The 1920 section, details a trip to the Florida Everglades and the third section, dated 1920, describes a trip to Andersonville, Georgia
Biographical or historical data
Amos Durbin, Sr. was one of the first settlers in Nineveh Township. By the 1830s, he and his son, William, both lived in Johnson County, Indiana. Amos was married to Susannah Durbin. Amos Durbin, Jr., also of Johnson County, was married to Mary Ann Durbin.
