Summary
This collection contains photocopies of photographs taken circa 1909 at the Staughton A. Fletcher home in Southport, Indiana. Most of the photographs are of Juanita and Vivian Lee and were taken in various outdoor locations on the Fletcher property. Denkichi Shindo stands with the Lee sisters in one of the photographs. The collection also includes "Blind Old Horse Ruben", a reminiscence written by Shindo in 1946 about his time at the Fletcher home from 1908 to 1909, most notably his memories of Ruben, the beloved horse of the Fletcher family. The manuscript was translated into English by Shindo's grandson Katsuhiko Shindo
Biographical or historical data
Denkichi Shindo was born in Japan around 1884 and immigrated to the United States in 1900. He began working at the home of Indianapolis banker Staughton A. Fletcher in 1908 and by 1912 was working as a bartender at the University Club of Indianapolis. While there, he would create pencil sketches and water colors and the members of the club referred to him as "Dennie the artist." He later moved to California and completed his education at Stanford University. He moved back to Japan and obtained a position in the office of the counsel-general in Tokyo and continued to work as a professional artist. Sources:Ancestry.com. "Dennie Shindo."
