The collection contains Davidson family correspondence, including that of Abigail Porter Davidson, David M. Davidson, and their grandson, Mark Davidson. There are some letters to Alice Davidson. Among Abigail Porter Davidson's letters are those to her brother Isaac and David's brothers, James and William. Mark Davidson's letters are those he wrote home during World War I. He was stationed in Mississippi before being deployed to France. After a short time in France, he was wounded and spent the rest of the war in military hospitals overseas and in the United States. Once released from the hospital, he wrote from an Agricultural School. Also included are a scrapbook of Abigail Melissa Davidson and programs and announcements
Biographical or historical data
Mary Abigail Porter was born in Eugene, Vermillion County, Indiana, in 1834. Her parents were John R. Porter, an Indiana judge, and Mary Worth. She had two brothers, Isaac (b. 1833) and Charles Dewey (b. 1843). On August 23, 1859, Abigail married David M. Davidson. David M. Davidson was born on December 22, 1822, to James B. and Orpha (McMechen) Davidson. David was one of ten children. He attended St. Louis Medical College. Abigail and David had two children, Alice (b. 1860) and David M. Mary Abigail Porter died on May 19, 1881. Her husband, David M. Davidson, died in March 1862, in Fort Jones, California. David M. Davidson, son of Mary Abigail Porter and David M. Davidson, was born on January 23, 1862, in Fort Jones, California. He had one sister, Alice. On November 27, 1890, David married Edith L. Haworth. Edith was born on March 3, 1865, in Georgetown, Illinois. Her parents were Calvin and Melissa S. (Lewis) Haworth. David and Edith had six children, Abigail Melissa, Mary Alice (b. 1893), Mark, Benjamin F. (b. 1896), Orpah (Orpha) (b. 1898), and Emily N. (b. 1902). David M. Davidson died around 1925. Edith died around 1935. Abigail Melissa Davidson, daughter of David M. Davidson and Edith L. Haworth, was born on October 6, 1891, in Cayuga, Indiana. In 1933, she married James Clutterbuck. Abigail died in January 1978, in Newport, Indiana. Mark Davidson, son of David M. Davidson and Edith Haworth, was born on November 3, 1894, in Cayuga, Indiana. He served in World War I, but was severely wounded shortly after arriving in France. Mark died in September 1985, in Cayuga, Indiana.
