Biographical or historical data
Daniel Webster Grubbs was born on May 19, 1835 in Henry County, Indiana to Rebecca Grubbs. He was the younger of two children. He worked at the New Castle Courier, then moved to Indianapolis in 1857, where he read law and was admitted to the bar. He served in the Civil War as a private, enlisting in Company B, Indiana 132nd Infantry Regiment on May 18, 1864. He was mustered out on September 7, 1864. He married Maltilda [Mathilde] Miller in 1866, with whom he had three children and who had been born in Mexico.He organized ad served as secretary of two insurance companies. He was elected alderman in 1878, then resigned in 1881 to campaign for mayor. Winning the election, he served from May 12, 1881 to January 1, 1884. He supported Sunday closing laws (Blue Laws) but thought the police should have a better strategy for eliminating houses of prostitution than raids. He moved to Parral, Mexico after serving one term as mayor, to manage the mining and banking interests of Matilda's family. He retired in 1903 and moved back to the United States. He died on February 5, 1917 in Harrodsburg, Kentucky and is buried in Crown Hill Cemetery, Indiana."Grubbs, Daniel". 1880 United States Federal Census.
