Biographical or historical data
Cornelius Mayer was born in Wurtzburg, Bavaria, Germany on February 17, 1847 to Georg Lorenz [Laurence] Cornelius (d.1859) and Margarethe Dorothea [Margaret Dorothy] Wust (d.1860) Mayer. He had two brothers, George Martin and Louis George. At a young age, Cornelius Mayer was apprenticed to a candy maker. He joined the Bavarian army in 1866 and immigrated to the United States, first to Springfield, Illinois, then to Indianapolis, Indianapolis in 1876. There Mayer worked for a German newspaper and later was named editor of the German Telegraph-Tribune in 1881. He was also a member of the Press Club. Mayer became private secretary to George F. Edenharter, superintendent of the Central State Hospital for the Insane in 1893. The chapel and amusement hall at the hospital was named for him. He was also an artist and landscape designer.Mayer first married Wilhelmina Johanna Miessen [Miesen] in St. Louis, Missouri and they had two sons, Robert Ingersoll and Louis George Cornelius and three daughters, Wilhelmina Johannah (Mrs. Edward Keyler), Georgia [George] A. Babette (Mrs. John Simeon McCullough) and Margaret Dorothea [Dorothy] (d.1908). Wilhelmina Mayer died in 1910 and was buried in Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis. Cornelius Mayer remarried on February 15, 1912, to Sarah Mildred Jackson.
