Summary
There are two items in this collection: a 14-page, typed manuscript by Rev. James D. Stanley entitled "A Short History of Christ Church Parish, Indianapolis, 1837-1912," circa 1936 and a ticket to the Ladies' Strawberry Festival dated June 5, 1863.Rev. Stanley gives the early history of the church, along with the names of missionaries, ministers, and rectors who served the congregation. On page 6, he lists the daughter churchs which were organized with the support of Christ Church. Rev. Stanley states that "on Sunday evenings especially the congregations are largely composed of visitors and strangers." (Page 7) From pages 8-11, memorials and gifts are recorded with the names of their donors. On pages 11-12, Rev. Stanley wrote "A Quiet Spot in City's Bustle" describing the church's location on the Circle as "woven into the city's business life in a way that makes it part of it." On page 12, William M. Herschell's article in the Indianapolis News entitled "Interior Impressively Beautiful" is reprinted. Page 13 has the poem by Maude Elizabeth Pate entitled "The Chimes of Christ Church." The last page reprints three deeds of money and land to the church

Biographical or historical data
Christ Church Parish began in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1837, and was received into the Diocese in 1838. The cornerstone of Christ Church was placed on May 7, 1838. By 1840, the church was nearly debt free. The original building was made of wood in the Gothic style. In 1857, this building was sold to the Bethel African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) Church, which was relocated to West Georgia Street before it was destroyed by arsonists in 1864. The present Gothic Revival-style Christ Church Cathedral building, located at 131 Monument Circle (now 125 Monument Circle), was constructed between 1857 and 1860, during which time the congregation met in the old Indiana State House. The present church was completed in 1860, and the spire added in 1869. Today, the church is considered the oldest building in Monument Circle.Sources:Items in the collection.Indiana Historical Bureau. "Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church." Historical Markers.
