Biographical or historical data
Charles H. Test was born in Wilmington, Delaware, on July 9, 1802. About 1810, the Test family moved to Brookville, Indiana. John Test, his father, was a judge in Indiana as well as a U.S. Congressman. Charles Test passed the bar in Indiana in 1822. Two years later, he married his first wife, Rebecca Davis and they had at least three children: Caroline, Thaddeus, and Ellen. In 1842, Charles married his second wife, Elizabeth Moore and they had three children: Charles, Lydia, Rebecca, and Edmond. Test spent much of his life in civil service, holding the positions of state representative (1826-1827); judge of the 6th circuit (1830-1836); state senator (1840-1841); Indiana secretary of state (1849-53); judge of the 12th circuit (1857-70); and Marion County criminal court judge (1872-74). He also authored a novel entitled The Novice. Test died on October 10, 1885.
