Biographical or historical data
Calvin Stratton Engle was born on September 9, 1844 to William and [Lutitia][Letitia] (Cabe) Engle at the Old Engle Homestead in Washington Township, Randolph County, Indiana. He was one of eleven sons, an older brother to James S. Engle. He joined the 69th Indiana Regiment but since he was underage and suffering from measles, his father brought him home. When he regained his health, he enlisted as a private in the Company C, 2nd Indiana Calvary on January 27, 1864. He was taken prisoner at Macon, Georgia on May 9, 1864 and was confined to prisons in Charleston, S.C. and Andersonville, in Georgia. He was released on February 28, 1865, returned home on March 23, 1865 and mustered out on July 31, 1865. His family and friends had thought him dead, and it took many months for him to recover from the prison hardships. He was married to Ellen Greeley, a distant relative of Horace Greeley, in Faribault, Minnesota on December 12, 1867, and they had six children. He lived in Minnesota from 1866, until they moved back to Indiana to operate the Old Engle Home Place, beginning in 1883. He was elected Auditor of Randolph County in 1898 and served for four years. Ellen died on August 20, 1905 and he then married Mrs. Martha E. Johnson on September 7, 1911.Information found within the collection."Engle, Calvin".
