Biographical or historical data
Joseph Marshall Francis was born in Eaglesmere, Pennsylvania on April 6, 1862 to James Booth and Charlotte Augusta Marshall Francis. He was the youngest of four children. His mother was a descendant of Chief Justice John Marshall. Joseph received his education from the Episcopal Academy in Pennsylvania, his B.A. from Racine College in Wisconsin, his B. Div. from Nashotah House and did graduate work at Oxford University in 1885. He received honorary Doctor of Divinity Degrees from Nashotah House in 1899 and Hobart College in 1901.He married Kate Stevens on June 14, 1887. They had no children.He was ordained a deacon in 1884 and ordained in 1886. He served parishes in Wisconsin from 1884-1887, was a missionary in Japan from 1887-1897 and was rector of Saint Paul's Church in Evansville, Indiana in 1898. He was consecrated as the sixth bishop of the (Episcopalian) Diocese of Indianapolis, Indiana, serving from 1899-1939. Bishop Francis served as chaplain of Base Hospital #32 in France from 1917-1918. He died in Indianapolis on February 13, 1939 and is buried in Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis.Information found within the collection."Francis, Joseph Marshall". Find a Grave Index, 1600s-Current.
