Summary
This collection contains news clippings from Columbus, Evansville and Rockport, Indiana newspapers ranging from 1917 to 1929 regarding U.S. Civil War veterans and the Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) and includes oversize items. The collection also contains three volumes created by August Leich regarding the G.A. R. and Company F, 24th Indiana Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Volume 1 contains registration records from the Department of the Indiana G.A.R. annual encampment at Evansville, Indiana in May, 1916 and listings of members of Farragut Post no. 27, G.A.R. from 1921 and 1922. Volume 2 contains a scrapbook of Company F, 24th Regiment ranging from 1877 to 1931 and includes general orders of the Evansville Light Guard Army; postcards, tickets, ribbons, letters, and news clippings regarding the 24th Regiment's reunions; the roster of Company F of the 24th; "The Vicksburg Campaign" by Lewis B. Jessup; "Lessons" from John W. Rogers; and a 1911 reunion photo. The third volume is an album inscribed, "A book for children of all ages. To Mr. & Mrs. William Warren, their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. This book is lovingly dedicated by August Leich, Evansville, Indiana September 15, 1920" and contains newsclippings of historical sketches of the 24th Regiment compiled by August Leich and other clippings about the Civil War and Abraham Lincoln. The second part of the album contains clippings of pictures of passenger ships and European locales
Biographical or historical data
August Leich was born on July 13, 1842 in Westphalia, Germany to Johann Heinrich and Johanne Leich. He Immigrated to the United States in 1849. He married Mathilda (1863-1963) on January 12, 1889 and they had three children: Royal (1890-1952), Armin (1891-1962), and Gretchen (1899-1984). Leich served in Company F, 24th Indiana Volunteer Infantry Regiment as principal musician. He was a Republican Indiana State Senator and was a charter member of the Farragut Post, No. 27, Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) in Evansville, Indiana.
