Biographical or historical data
Arthur Raymond Robinson was born in Pickerington, Fairfield County, Ohio, on March 12, 1881 to John F. and Catherine Beard Robinson; he was the youngest of four sons, including Jacob E., John A. and William. He married Frieda Almers Elfers on Dec. 27, 1901, with whom he had three children; Arthur R., Willard E. and Catharine. He was graduated from the Ohio Northern University at Ada, OH in 1901, the Indiana Law School at Indianapolis, IN in 1910, and the University of Chicago, Chicago, Illinois., in 1913. He was admitted to the bar in 1910 and practiced law in Indianapolis. Arthur was a member of the Indiana State senate from 1914-1918 and was the Republican floor leader during the entire period. During the First World War, he served in the army as a first lieutenant, captain, and major, serving in France in the Army of Occupation. He served as judge of Marion County Superior Court from 1921-1922 and resumed the practice of law in Indianapolis in 1922. He was appointed on October 20, 1925, as a Republican to the United States Senate and was subsequently elected on November 2, 1926, to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Samuel M. Ralston. He was reelected in 1928 and served from October 20, 1925, to January 3, 1935, serving as chairman of the Committee on Pensions (Seventieth through Seventy-second Congresses). He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1934. He continued to practice law in Indianapolis until his death there on March 17, 1961.
