Summary
This is a small travel diary written in pencil, about the 1908 French River trip taken by Ralph S. Norwood, Myles Sinnott, and Arthur L. Strauss. They left Indianapolis on Saturday, July 11, on the train bound for Callander, Ontario. After "a miserable hot night on the sleeper, we arrived at Buffalo." They walked across the Suspension Bridge to Canada. They took a train for Toronto, then a "steamer to Hanlon's point, one of Toronto's pleasure resorts. Sinnott and Strauss went swimming." Arthur's July 16 entry reads: "After a good night's rest, Ralph and Myles got up early and caught two nice fish 1 bass 1 lb. and one pike 2/4 lb. Arthur got up late and all fell to making breakfast consisting of fried fish , bread, oatmeal and tea." The three young men were in a canoe during their Canadian trip. On July 23, Mr. Strauss wrote: "Arthur struck off through the woods and lost the canvas washbasin. Mosquitoes by the million and rain made the portage anything but agreeable. Next our canoe had to be portaged. This we did by having all three take hold two at front with a pole under the canoe. S the third man at the stern. The canoe had to be taken by a rough wagon road through the woods. It was the hardest portage ever undertaken by us. Wet to the skin up to our hips where the wet bushes struck us and bitten up by mosquitoes as never before we reached the railroad station after fifty minutes of the hardest kind of labor under the most trying difficulties." The last entry, August 11, records the return from Toronto to Indianapolis. Mr. Strauss lists costs of items taken on the trip, and frequently tells what food they ate. There is a slip of paper inserted between the pages with the typed information: "Utawana boat club."
