Summary
This collection contains photostatic copies of letters and military account documents ranging from 1791 to 1814 that were collected by Arthur J. Mitten and copied in 1927. The collection includes: a letter by Postmaster General Timothy Pickering from Philadelphia to Samuel Hodgdon, Quartermaster of the Western Army (December 16, 1791); an account and acknowledgement of money received by General Anthony Wayne from paymaster Caleb Swan (April 18, 1793); an account of clothing returned by 3rd troop of Light Dragoons at Fort Greenville with signatures of Paul McDermott, Sam C. Vance, and Anthony Wayne (September 29, 1795); account of clothing returned signed by General Wayne from Greenville (November 18, 1795); an order for shoes to be sent to troops at "Michilimackinac" by General Wayne at Detroit (October 6, 1796); receipt signed by John Ellis Wool, Major of the 29th U.S. Infantry (August 7, 1813); a letter sent to John Armstrong, U.S. Secretary of War, from William Henry Harrison at head quarters "near Moravian town on the river Thames" (December 5, 1813); a note certifying the accuracy of an abstract of returned supplies received for the troops at Fort Knox and signed by Major Zachary Taylor of the 7th Regiment U.S. Infantry (November, 1813); and a resignation letter sent to Secretary Armstrong from Major General Harrison from his headquarters at Cincinnati, Ohio (May 11, 1814)
Biographical or historical data
Arthur G. (A.G.) Mitten was a native of Brighton, England. Born on March 13, 1866 to George and Jane Mitten, he and his family emigrated to America and arrived in Goodland, Indiana in 1875. Mitten married Adda J. Britt on June 11, 1889 and they had two children. He worked for the Chicago and Eastern Illinois Railroad, first as an agent at Swanington and Attica, and later an executive in Chicago. After retirement, Mitten and his wife moved back to Goodland where he was involved in various community activities and served as president of the Mitten Memorial Library. He also served as vice president of the Indiana Historical Society and was a well known collector of historical documents regarding the Northwest Territory and William Henry Harrison.
