Biographical or historical data
Anthony Joseph Lauck was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, December 30, 1908 to Anthony Peter and Marie E. Habig Lauck. He was the oldest of six children. He attended Sacred Heart and Cathedral High Schools. He studied at Cranbook Art Academy with Carl Milles; received a diploma in Fine Arts from the John Herron Art School in 1936; an A.B. from the University of Notre Dame in 1942; a certificate in Carving and Painting from the Corcoran School of Art in 1948; and was a graduate student at Columbia University. He toured European art museums for a year.He entered the Congregation of Holy Cross (C.S.C.) in 1937; was ordained a priest in the Roman Catholic Church in 1946; and served in churches in Washington, D.C., New York and Notre Dame, Indiana.He was an artist in the mediums of drawing, glass, sculpture and wood carving; an author; and a lecturer. He became a member of the faculty of the University of Notre Dame in 1950, Associate Professor of Sculpture in 1958, chairman of the art department from 1960 to September 1967, and director of the University Art Gallery around 1962. His work has been exhibited in many regional exhibitions and his permanent collections are in the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Norfolk Museum of Art, South Bend Art Association and the John Herron Art Institute, and at the University of Notre Dame. He won many awards and prizes and served as a judge for many art competitions. He died April 21, 2001 and is buried in Holy Cross Cemetery, Notre Dame, Indiana.
