Biographical or historical data
Ambrose A. Stevens was born on September 20, 1829 in Jefferson County, New York to Alexander and Lydia Stevens. He married Marion Frazell on November 10, 1853 and they moved to Michigan in 1856. On June 10, 1861, he mustered into the 3rd Michigan Volunteer Infantry with the rank of lieutenant colonel at the start of the U.S. Civil War. Stevens was promoted and appointed colonel of the newly organized Michigan 21st Infantry Regiment in September, 1862. Wounded at the Battle of Perryville, Kentucky on October 8, 1862, he resigned from service due to disability on February 3, 1863. When the Invalid Corps was created, Stevens was commissioned as a major of the 5th Regiment in July, 1863. Shortly thereafter, he was promoted to colonel and then took over command of Camp Morton at Indianapolis, Indiana on October 22, 1863. Stevens held this position until the end of the war and was promoted to brevet brigadier general in March, 1865 before being mustered out of service on September 30, 1865. He moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan around 1872 and lived there until his death at the age of 85 on May 23, 1915. Sources: Ancestry.com. "Ambrose A. Stevens." Michigan Death Records, 1867-1950.
