Biographical or historical data
Albert Gallatin Porter was born in Lawrenceburg, Indiana on April 20, 1824. He attended preparatory school at Hanover (Indiana) College and was graduated from Indiana Asbury University (now DePauw University) in 1843. He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1845, subsequently practicing in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was city attorney from 1851-1853; reporter of the Indiana Supreme Court, 1853- 1857 and a member of the city council from 1857-1859. He served as Republican representative to Congress from 1859-1863 and First Comptroller of the Indiana Treasury from 1878-1880. Albert served as the 19th governor of Indiana, from 1881-1885; delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1888; and was appointed United States Minister to Italy from 1889-1892lHe married Minerva V. Brown in Marion County, Indiana on Nov. 30, 1846. They had five children: Omer T., George T., Edward, Anna and Albert B. Minerva died in 1875 and is buried in Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis. He and Cornelia Stone were married in Manhattan, New York on Jan. 5, 1881; she died in 1885 or 1886 and is also buried in Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis. Gov.
